Two-time and reigning Southeast Asian Games Wrestling Champions Margarito Angana Jr. and Jason Balabal stamped their class anew in the 2012 Buno Championship Filipino Olympic Wrestling Tournament held at the Elements Tent, Eton Centris, Quezon City last January 21-22. For their championship matches, Angana and Balabal beat their Philippine Wrestling teammates Excel Tubog and Esmael Trazona, respectively.

The tournament organized by the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) served as a preparatory competition for the SEAG Champions who will next see action in the Asian Senior Wrestling Championship in Gumi, South Korea from February 14-20. Participation in the Asian Championship is a prerequisite by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) for joining the three subsequent 2012 Olympic Games Wrestling Qualifiers.

According to WAP Chairman Aries Supremo, "Angana Jr. and Balabal were hardly challenged, easily disposing of all their opponents. They really need to train and compete with stronger foreign athletes to fully prepare for the coming Olympic Games Qualifiers."

The Buno Championship served as the WAP's first quarter National Wrestling Championship for the year. WAP President Albert Balde proudly claimed that the event "drew participation from more than 100 athletes as young as 10 years old from various wrestling clubs nationwide." Emerging as team champion is Quezon City, followed by Baguio City, and then Zamboanga City.
