FILA Grappling Emissary Jason Townsend visits Philippines, leaves assured of WAP's support

Jason Townsend, one of the original authors of the rules of the grappling event of the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA), met with Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) President Juan Albert Balde and Secretary General Karlo Sevilla last January 27, 2012 at the St. Giles Hotel in Makati City.

Townsend, who currently serves as FILA Head of Grappling for Pan America and was former head coach of the USA Grappling Team, briefed the WAP officers on the current developments of the international wrestling federation's grappling and amateur MMA events.

He revealed that FILA is holding the first Asian Grappling Championship in the first half of the current year, with the host country still to be decided upon. He also shared that prior to visiting Makati, he spent time at MMA fighter Ole Laursen's gym in Boracay Island.

Inside that MMA gym, he witnessed Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) Middleweight Champion Froilan Sarenas of Submission Sports in training. Townsend claimed, "Froilan Sarenas is highly-skilled, I think he'll do great in international grappling competitions."

In turn, Balde and Sevilla pledged WAP's support to FILA grappling. They assured Townsend that they would find ways to send a Philippine Grappling Team to the 2012 Asian and World Senior Grappling Championships, the latter to be held in Russia from October 11-13.
