World Qualifying Tournament in Taiyuan, China
By: Karlo Silverio L. Sevilla III

The Philippine Wrestling Team fell short in qualifying any athlete to the 2012 London Olympics during the qualifier in Taiyuan, China from April 25-30, 2012, all losing in their respective first bouts to European wrestlers.

01. Alvin Lobreguito was pinned (wrestling's equivalent of a KO) by his opponent from Germany in the first round of their 55 kg. freestyle match. Score 7-0.

02. Likewise, Margarito Angana Jr. lost to the German wrestler in the first round by pin in their 55 kg. match in Greco-Roman. Score 9-0.

03. Jason Balabal lasted two rounds but lost both by superiority, overwhelmingly outscored, by the Spanish wrestler in the 84 kg. Greco-Roman division. Score 6-0, 7-0.

04. Julie Gonzalez was the best performer considering she lasted two rounds and lost to her opponent from Portugal by mere point advantage and not by superiority. She could've performed better if she didn't injure her knee. Score 3-0, 2-0.

The three men learned and benefited much from their one-month training in China, for which the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) is very grateful to the POC and PSC. It's just that the other European countries at this stage are much more advanced in the sport of wrestling, in quantity and quality of athletes.

Miss Julie Gonzalez, being coach of the State of California Girls Wrestling Team, can potentially tap young and competitive Fil-Am wrestlers into the Philippine Wrestling Team in the future.
